Happy Bi Visibility Day!
Remember these five things:
1. Bi means attracted to more than one gender, not just "both halves of a binary."
2. Dating someone doesn't change your orientation β you don't become straight or gay just because of who you're currently with, though many bi+ people hide their orientation when in a straight- or gay-presenting relationship because of stigma.
3. Many people whose orientation and attractions pattern fit bisexual β identify as gay, straight, or pan β and thatβs their choice to make. But Iβd encourage more of us in that boat to say βIβm bi, but I generally identify as gay since Iβm homoromanticβ β¦ like I just did
4. There are many microlabels β sometimes filed under the bi+ umbrella, but plenty of which work for monosexual people too. I'd encourage more of us to look at the trans- and nonbinary-inclusive terms like androsexual and gynesexual. I told a straight friend recently who was freaking out: you're just gynesexual, you can still say you're "str8."
5. Younger people have been more willing to claim the bi+ label. Gen X and Boomers at 2%, Millennials at 6%, Gen Z at 15%
B is becoming the biggest letter (numerically) in LGBTQ+
There are three things every person navigates:
Attraction β what you find hot, deeply personal, and can include kinks and fetishes. Many of us keep parts of this hidden out of embarrassment or stigma.
Behavior β who you actually do what with, and important to share with trusted medical professionals. MSM and closeted people keep this secret, but plenty of people have at least dipped a toe into bi+ behavior.
Identity β no one else gets to tell you what this is. It's who you decide to be, the face you show the world, and hopefully one you learn to love.
