Gays Against Us: King James I
"Christ had his John, & I have my George."
That's King James defending his love for George Villiers to his own Privy Council in 1617. If you watched 'Mary & George,' you know how openly this court ran on the king's favorites.
Londoners joked "Elizabeth was King, now James is Queen."
His letters to Villiers leave little doubt. James called him "my sweet child & wife" & signed off "your dear dad & husband." Villiers signed his as "your humble slave & dog."
James was openly queer & awfulβespecially to other queer people.
In 'Basilikon Doron,' the guidebook of advice James wrote for his heir, he listed the crimes a king is bound in conscience never to pardon (in others at least): witchcraft, murder, incest, poisoning, counterfeiting, & sodomy. He filed relationships like his own next to witchcraft.
And he hated βwitchesβ, personally interrogating tortured women at the North Berwick witch trials & wrote 'Daemonologie' as a guide book to hunting & burning them.
βWitchesβ were often lesbians like, Maud Galtβsince living without men, refusing to marry, leaving your husband, being seen corrupting other women or even owning a dildo were all signs of the beast according to James.
Henry VIII's Buggery Act nearly a century earlier made sodomy a hanging offense (in part to persecute gay Catholic monks) James could have repealed it, but instead he & his favorites stayed above it all while the rope stayed ready for any working class or political rival caught doing what the king did in the open.
And his name is still on the Bible translation constantly quoted from pulpits to condemn us. Thatβs not really the worse thing he did but certainly the most enduring.
James believed in the divine right of kings & had the power to change the law, he just didnβt care toβ¦
too busy burning feminists witches and buggering with boys.
Definitely a gay against us, we will be doing an occasional series of these bad queers who targeted their own communities.
