🏳️‍🌈🏺 2-GAY IN HISTORY: Bible 7🛐🏳️‍🌈 Biblical law codes police gender boundaries (Deut 22:5) — a verse used to outlaw drag and “cross dressing” in the West until the civil rights era. But the narrative tradition repeatedly presents heroes whose difference is their strength. Joseph’s garment (ketonet passim) appears elsewhere only to describe robes worn by royal virgin daughters. He is called “beautiful in form and appearance” (Gen 39:6) — a phrase used exclusively for women. He refuses heterosexual advances at great personal cost, succeeds through interpretation and emotional intelligence rather than conquest, and his wife is handed to him by Pharaoh and barely mentioned again. Daniel is delivered into the household of Ashpenaz, the sar hasarisim — chief of the eunuchs. The Hebrew already describes Daniel as tovei mar’eh, beautiful in appearance. In Daniel 1:9, God grants him hesed before Ashpenaz — covenant love, the language of intimate faithfulness. He resists imperial renaming, refuses royal food, and thrives not through force but through devotion — from inside the most gender-transgressive household in the ancient Near East. They are not alone. The Bible celebrates women who use the tools and methods usually reserved for men as well. Deborah judges Israel and commands its armies. Jael assassinates an enemy general and is praised in Israel’s victory song: “Most blessed of women be Jael.” Older biblical law codes try to police gender, yet the narrative tradition repeatedly lauds heroes who cross those boundaries and thrive.
